Tom here, General Manager and resident product guru at OneBlade. Today, I wanted to take some time to talk about our latest additions to the OneBlade lineup — our Black Tie Shaving Cream and After Shave Balm.

Now, I speak for everyone on the OneBlade team when I say that we are all REALLY, REALLY, excited about these two new products. They represent more than a year of product testing, listening to customer feedback, and formula tweaking. As a “sensitive skin type guy” myself, I tend to be the company guinea pig when it comes to testing skin care products, and I can confidently and proudly say that these products are truly top notch when it comes to performance for all skin types.

A backstory about how we got here.
It’s worth noting that when we first launched OneBlade, we had no intention of getting into the “software” side of shaving; that is, focusing development around products outside of our razors and blades (in the skin care category). But achieving a truly incredible shave goes beyond the “hardware”. You can have the best razor and blade combination in the world, but if you’re not using proper technique along with high quality shave cream and after shave, you’re prone to redness and irritation. After all, shaving is an exfoliating process. And if you’re coming from a cartridge or an electric razor background, your skin is probably not used to this level of deep exfoliating just yet. So, if you’re using cheaply made and poor quality skin care products — or skimping on steps like applying a moisturizing after shave balm altogether, then you’re not setting yourself up for success with OneBlade (or really any shave).
 
With this in mind, we realized that we needed to offer a complete end-to-end shaving system for our OneBlade customers, one that we could truly stand behind for achieving that world-class shaving experience (and that also wouldn’t break the bank). So, we set out on a quest in early 2017 to meet with the top skin care product manufacturers around the USA. After interviewing dozens of labs, consulting with Chief Science Officers, and testing upwards of 100 different base shaving cream and after shave formulas, we are happy to say that we found a domestic partner that we can really trust, who makes nothing but ultra-high quality products using all skin-friendly ingredients.
 
With our skin care partner in place, we dove head first into formula tweaking and lab testing (yes, this entailed a lot of office shaves for our internal team). And last June, we released a limited batch of our white label shaving cream along with a moisturizing post shave gel. But we didn’t stop there. We spent the next few months listening to customer feedback and continued to tweak our formulas, including a major switch to a balm base for our after shave instead of a gel. Fast-forward to November, we released our second round of premium skin care products, our Black Tie Shaving Cream and After Shave Balm.

OneBlade Black Tie Shaving Cream, 150ml.


Our Black Tie Shaving Cream is similar to our initial formula but includes a few key upgrades. It entails a soft cream style for super easy lathering (particularly helpful for customers new to single blade shaving). It’s packed with nine ultra-skin friendly ingredients, including natural butters, rich essential oils, and healthy antioxidants. It’s also free from skin irritants like parabens, phthalates, sulfates, artificial fragrances, artificial dyes, and alcohol, making it excellent for all skin types. Key ingredients include Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Lavender, and Geranium essential oil.

As previously mentioned, our alcohol-free Black Tie After Shave Balm is a major update from our initial formula, in that we have switched from a gel to a balm base, as we found it to be strongly preferred amongst the customers we spoke to. We also completely overhauled and upgraded our ingredient profile, featuring a relatively new breakthrough in moisturizing products known as SyriCalm™ CLR, a patented botanical complex specifically formulated to calm and revitalize skin after shaving. Other key ingredients include Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel, CoQ10, Kaolin, Lavender essential oil, and Red Tea Extract.

The power of essential oils.
With many moisturizers today touting themselves as “oil-free”, we frequently get asked about whether or not essential oils are really safe for the skin. The truth is that pure, high quality essential oils can be intensely nourishing and balancing for all skin types. But when you’re using products with adulterated essential oils (this is a real thing), or products using the wrong concentrations and/or dosage amount, you can run into problems with irritation. That’s why it’s always important to buy only from reputable companies, and we tend to favor those based domestically.
