The most underutilized step in shaving happens to be the most critical step to a perfectly smooth shave. Understanding your facial growth patterns will dictate the direction in which you should be shaving.
How do you map the grain? Take a few seconds to run your fingers along your cheeks, chin, and neck, confirming your own hair growth patterns.
Next, pay particular attention to the “with the grain” direction (the direction that feels the smoothest) as this is the best place to begin shaving.
It is also important to note that direction may change around different areas of your face and neck.
Multiple passes are the key to successful shaving with any single blade razor. Each pass will progressively remove the hair more closely to the skin. In three passes, you’ll have that BBS (baby butt smooth) shave we’re all after.
No shaving cream, then no shaving. Never run a razor over an area of skin that does not have lubrication on it. Make sure to re-apply shaving cream before each pass.
